Argentina’s Lionel Messi has won his sixth Balón de Oro, the most prestigious individual award in world football.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who has five of these awards, was ranked sixth in the list.

Messi defeated Robert Lewandowski in a penalty shootout. After the award was not given out in 2020, the Bayern Munich winger was left with the award for the best delanter of the year.

Lionel Messi stated that Lewandowski deserved to win the Ballon d’Or last year and that France Football, the magazine that bestows the award, should do so.

Messi won the much-anticipated Copa América with Argentina this year and then moved to PSG after a tumultuous period with Barcelona. Even though he did not win the Liga de Campeones or the Spanish league, the Argentine won his first FIFA title with his country and had a strong individual performance. He was the champion of the previous season in Spain, winning the Pichichi for the eighth time.
